“Rituals” is an album featuring Butterfly Effect Ensemble and archival recordings from 2014. Members of the ensemble are Stephen Horenstein, woodwinds and live electronics, Jeffery Kowalsky, percussion and Lior Navok, piano. The music was created as real-time composition with an emphasis on textural episodes evoking the ceremonial and mysterious. The group’s acoustic “palette” included a search for new sound combinations designed to trigger the listener’s imagination as if he/she were immersed in an unknown world filled with strange occurrences and the unexpected. The instrumentation embraces unusual instruments such as Thai nipple gongs, heat sink, glass glockenspiel, Chinese saxophones, Greek double reeds, hand-made folk harp, amglocken, World War II helmet, Irish fife, bass flute, kalimba, Pungi snake charmer, shakuhachi, Buddhist bowls, boo-bams, live electronics and more!

As part of their work together, Butterfly Effect Ensemble also established the “Cine-Concert Project creating contemporary music to “breath new life into silent films”. This work has influenced this current recording both in the creation of a common language of sounds cues and the group’s ability to create a viable architectures of sound tableaus.
